I am back with new and hip postings!

Hello everyone and thanks for reading....as of May 1st, I am officially back on the "What's on Craig's Mind" blog. As some of you might know, I started this web-log as a way to communicate with you (and hopefully in the future you to me) some of my thoughts and observations on investing, business and personal life in general.

I started writing some of these notes late 2006 and stopped in February of this year when I left to get a hip resurfacing in England (more on that later, but if you would like to see some details on my hip resurfacing operation click here). After 3 months of intensive rehab, I feel better than I have for a number of years and look forward to once again getting back to the cutting edge of research applications in the financial industry. The financial research world changes pretty fast but one thing is constant: if you find unique ideas that can make money, people want to hear about them. I will also post notes on this blog that I think will help you understand some basic marketing principles I have learned… And finally, when there is something interesting about life in general that I would like to share, I will post that here.

All of my postings have one goal in mind: to help make you think in a different way. I apologize in advance if some of these postings don't do the trick but would still love to hear your comments. So let's have some fun and try to change the world!

All the best,   Craig Gordon

The Top Ten Things I Have Learned From Doing Research For 25 years.

Recently I gave a speech to my counterparts at Off the Record Research regarding the top ten things I have learned doing research during the past 25 years. Some of you have asked me to post the speech notes on the website, so here they are. Hopefully the next twenty-five years will give me at least another ten issues for me to share! Hope you enjoy them.

The five, I mean six characteristics of leaders.

Last month I attended a father-son banquet at my son's high school where the featured speaker was Captain Paul “Buddy” Bucha, President of the Congressional Medal of Honor Society. As I settled into listening to Captain Bucha's speech I realized he was giving us a road map for leaders. The first point he made was that most leaders have a responsibility thrust on them... it takes extraordinary times to make extraordinary leaders and many people rise to the occasion rather than choosing to be a leader. This was a real lesson for me, and it reinforced my suspicions of people who try to be leaders when leadership might not be needed.

However in those situations where leadership is needed (and I can think of a number of places in the world right now where we really could use a leader), Captain Bucha gave us the five following characteristics as must haves:

Everyone Needs Some Time To Think
When I was growing up my father used to tell me there were two ways you could make money…either be a doer or a thinker, and that a combination of both is needed to be successful. Well as I sit here reading my over 200 emails for the day, I am starting to wonder how many of us make time to think in our work anymore...Write Comment (0 Comments)

Why I think Blue Man Group is the best case study...

Why I think Blue Man Group is the best case study for growing your business and how they helped me look for companies to invest in.

Yesterday when I was riding my bike to work I ended up behind a Muni bus in San Francisco which had a large advertisement on the bus talking about the infamous Blue Man Group performing at the Oakland Coliseum in February. I chuckled to myself and thought two things: first it has been over 12 years since a friend of mine in the hedge fund business took me to see them in a small theatre in Greenwich Village and now they are playing sold out shows in places like the Oakland coliseum! How far they have grown as a business as I also know they have an ongoing show in Las Vegas and many other enterprises. I also thought about how the minute I saw the add I wanted to see the show again and how the picture of men in blue faces brought back a lot of fun. And that I wanted to show them to other people I thought would enjoy them.

Craig's Top Ten Investment Questions for 2007
Greeting to 2007...in past years I have always started the year  with my top ten investment question list.. these are question I think if answered before others can lead to money making investments as the rest of the world catches up. Hopefully through our network of sources and surveys we can find answers to these and other client questions like this before they become common knowledge on the street. Once way I used to use these questions when I covered accounts was to meet with my smartest clients face to face and use them as a dialog to get some others they were interested in we might help them with. Anybody have any others?

Here are Craig's 2007 goals, what are yours?
Overview of Goals

For me 2006 was a transitional year....I have changed my position at OTA from being the general partner in charge of Off the Record to a senior strategist looking for new opportunities for all of OTA. My compensation incentive has been changed to encourage me to work for new businesses as I have given up most of my profit sharing from OTR to work on new ventures.

2007 I hope will be the first of many years where  new ideas start to really grow revenues for OTA. Although still involved in OTR with some of my time( less than a third) I hope to keep my involvement to strategic issues and stay away from the day to day decisions. In the meantime, it is in my nature to look for new ideas and take the upfront risk of a start-up. I hope by the end of the year one of the new ideas in research or investment management are more than just a twinkle in my eye but a real business opportunity.
Finally I am going under the knife to correct a hip problem I have had in early February and will probably slow my business life down for 4-6 weeks around that time..

With this overview in mind her are my specific business goals for 2007:
